How Much Does an Eye Test Cost?
At Glassery Optometry, eligible patients are bulk billed for routine comprehensive eye examinations when Medicare criteria are met.
A structured Comprehensive Eye Test includes an accurate prescription assessment (distance and near), eye pressure screening, and evaluation of the retina, macula and optic nerve. Where clinically indicated, we also assess peripheral vision, cataract changes, eye coordination and focusing function to ensure both visual clarity and overall ocular health are thoroughly reviewed.
Are Eye Tests Bulk Billed?
Medicare provides rebates for eligible eye examinations according to established guidelines.
In general:
- Routine examinations are covered at recommended intervals
- Earlier examinations may be covered where there is clinical need
- Eligibility depends on age, testing history and symptoms
Your optometrist determines eligibility according to Medicare guidelines at the time of examination.
Should I Wait Until I’m “Due” for My Next Eye Test?
No.
If you notice:
- Sudden changes in vision
- Blurred or fluctuating clarity
- New headaches
- Eye discomfort
- Increased light sensitivity
- new ocular symptoms
- symptoms of flashes and or floaters
You should not delay assessment.
Medicare includes item numbers for clinically necessary examinations outside routine intervals when criteria are met.
Does Additional Testing Cost More?
Where clinically indicated and Medicare criteria are satisfied, certain additional investigations may attract a Medicare rebate. If any service is not covered, this will always be discussed before proceeding.
Our Bulkbilled eye test will include (but not limited to):
• Glaucoma Screening and Monitoring
• Dry Eye Assessment and Management
Why an Eye Test Is More Than a Prescription Check
An eye examination may help detect:
- Early glaucoma
- Cataract development
- Macular changes
- Retinal abnormalities
Routine assessment supports preventative care and long-term visual stability.
